 Palm Islands in Dubai
The Palm Islands in Dubai. New Dutch dredging technology was used to create these massive man made islands. They are the largest artificial islands in the world and can be seen from space. Three of these Palms will be made with the last one being the largest of them all.

Hydropolis
Hydropolis, the world’s first underwater hotel. Entirely built in Germany and then assembled in Dubai, it is scheduled to be completed by 2009 after many delays.

There are also many other examples of amazing architecture coming to Dubai. It’s amazing to see, yet despressing at the same time.

Can’t blame the boys in Dubai for what they done with there money, but you gotta look at the a**holes that line up like greedy lemmings in SUVs and worse every morning at the pumps. European style high speed diesels are 30% more efficient than gasoline cars, and most of a bbl of oil is diesel, and it burns without harmful anti-knock compounds added. De-sulfuring it costs some, but nothing like cracking to gasoline, yet we hang on to our gas engines! Our own military does not use gasoline! Jeep has a new diesel engine for the military that uses diesel, not gasoline! Why are we so stupid not to see the light! Diesel can save us 30% on our oil consumption, and our ‘gas’ bills, so where’s the catch? The big three automakers have certainly let us down on engine selection!

um… Dubai has no crude oil resources. Up until very recently they’re economy was based pretty much entirely on ceramics. Now it’s tourist-based.

Actually, Dubai did not get its money from oil. Most of the wealth there is from foreign investments. It caters to both westerners and other middle eastern people. Because they are not an oil rich country, they have built these amazing attractions to garner attention through a different means.

    Why is it depressing????

Read and learn about Dubai and you might be very surprised. Simple assuming that they are fleecing us with high oil prices is rather ignorant and xenophobic.

UAE (That’s the United Arab Emirates, the country in which you will find Dubai), has virtually no poverty and crime, because the oil revenue is shared by almost all residents. This is in stark contrast to other oil nations (Saudi Arabia et. al.), where the wealth is hyperconcentrated among ruling “royal” families, while the rest of the nation suffers.

At the same time, Dubai / UAE knows their oil reserves will likely run dry prior to 2030. So rather than being blind to it and hoping for the best, they have spent the last two decades striving to turn this city on the Gulf Coast into a world renowned destination resort and center for commerce. As such, building has occurred at break neck speed.

I would gladly pay current oil prices if the result was more nations and cities like UAE and Dubai.

Don’t think of it as depressing. Poverty in Saudi Arabia- where everyone could be rich beyond comprehension if there was any sense of social justice or moral obligation, is depressing. Dubai is encouraging and even inspiring if you will.
